Professional titles can be confusing. You do not need to learn them all. What matters is understanding the person's training, whether they are authorised to provide the service and whether they have relevant experience.
Psychologists and psychiatrists
Cyprus has separate registers for psychology graduates and licensed psychologists. A psychology degree alone does not authorise independent specialist psychological assessment and treatment. Licensed psychologists work within their approved specialty, which may include clinical or counselling psychology.
Ask about the psychologist's approved specialty and experience with difficulties like yours. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialising in mental health; medication and medical assessment may be part of their work. Psychiatrists and psychologists may work together when that fits your needs.
Other titles need an explanation
“Psychotherapist”, “counsellor”, “therapist” or “coach” does not, by itself, explain the underlying profession or practice licence. Ask: “What is your underlying profession and specialty, and where can I check your registration?” Cyprus law requires titles that may imply psychological practice to be presented alongside an approved professional title. See the example about using the title “psychotherapist”.
Membership of a professional association differs from statutory registration. A title, advertisement or many positive reviews cannot answer all these questions.
